The issue of addiction and substance misuse in the workplace is a growing concern in the UK.
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), in 2019 approximately 10.7 million people in the UK drank alcohol at levels that increased the risk of harm to their health.
This is equivalent to one in six adults.
In terms of prescribed medication misuse, the NHS Digital’s publication “Statistics on Drug Misuse: England, 2021” reported that in 2019/20, there were 6,797 deaths in England related to drug misuse, which is a 9% increase from the previous year.
Furthermore, the NHS reports that in 2019/20, there were 1,381 admissions to hospitals in England due to accidental poisoning by opioids, which is a 40% increase from 2015/16.
These statistics highlight the need for organisations to take addiction seriously, as it not only affects the health and well-being of their employees, but also impacts their productivity and overall performance.
At Proclivitas, we believe that addressing addiction in the workplace is not only a moral obligation but also a business imperative.
